PMS: What is it?

Three out of four women complain of pre-menstrual discomfort. For approximately 25% of these women, premenstrual symptoms are very distressing, significantly impairing their quality of life. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS for short) has many faces: from mood swings and digestive and sleep disorders to fatigue, irritability, and depression. PMS symptoms appear approximately four to fourteen days before the onset of menstruation and improve dramatically with the onset of menstruation. How does PMS develop?

Although PMS is a widespread female disorder, the exact causes are not yet scientifically understood . What is certain is that PMS is linked to fluctuations in the female hormonal balance: The primary cause is likely an imbalance of the two hormones estrogen and progesterone . After ovulation, increased progesterone production occurs, and estrogen levels decrease. In the second half of the cycle (i.e., before the onset of menstruation), the cycle is controlled by progesterone. Some women react extremely sensitively to this change.
